A laceration of the hip joint involves the cartilage ring (upper lip) extending along the acetabular edge. In addition to providing cushioning for the hip joint, the upper lip is like a rubber seal or gasket that helps securely secure the ball head on the top of the femur into the acetabulum.
Athletes participating in events such as ice hockey, soccer, rugby, golf and ballet are more likely to have hip labrum tears. Hip structural problems can also lead to laceration of the hip joint.
